The Dirt On Getting Cleaner Office Accessories

Fellowes expands its new line of first-ever computer accessories with built-in Microban® protection - providing an added level of cleanliness in the workspace.

January 6, 2005/Itasca, Ill. - With today's hectic workloads and longer work hours, people are spending more time than ever at their desks. But keeping it clean, along with the desktop accessories that surround it is not a top priority. In fact, according to microbiologist and author of "The Secret Life of Germs", Dr. Philip Tierno, nearly 90 percent of Americans do not clean their workspaces regularly. Dirty workspaces could lead to ideal conditions for damaging microbes, such as bacteria, to grow and reproduce. Even more startling, under the right conditions, some microbes can duplicate every 15-20 minutes on an inviting surface.

To help people across the country clean up their "home away from home" and keep computer accessories free of damaging microbes, Fellowes, Inc., a worldwide leader in products to equip the workspace, expands its technology accessory line of keyboards, mice and mouse pads, and introduces the first ever wrist rests and foot rests featuring Microban® antimicrobial product protection.

Microban antimicrobial technology provides an added level of cleanliness by inhibiting the uncontrolled growth of damaging microbes, such as bacteria, that can cause stains, odors and product deterioration. It works continuously so that when microorganisms come in contact with the surface of technology accessories with Microban protection, the technology penetrates the cell wall of the microorganism, disrupting key cell functions and making the microbes unable to function, grow or reproduce.

Cleaning workspaces can reduce and may even temporarily rid ordinary untreated surfaces of microbes. However, the effect is short lived and does not prevent remaining or redeposited bacteria from reproducing on the surface over short periods of time - between washes and uses.

"Although not a substitute for normal cleaning, Microban technology provides an added level of protection between cleanings and in hard to reach places that lasts the lifetime of the product," said Billy Henry, president of Microban (Americas). The exclusive Fellowes assortment of technology accessories with Microban antimicrobial product protection includes:

"While conducting extensive consumer research to find the next big breakthrough in office products we noticed a theme: consumers were concerned about microbes," said Steve Petersen, Director of Workplace Essentials, Fellowes, Inc. "Our new line not only features the functionality and quality consumers expect from Fellowes, but it also provides antimicrobial protection right at your fingertips."

Microban protection has a long history of safe use and can be found in leading brands of consumer and industrial products used in homes, offices, foodservice operations and healthcare facilities around the world. In addition, nearly 30 different independent laboratories have conducted over 20,000 tests using industry standard testing methods, proving Microban protection to be highly effective at controlling the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause odors, stains and product deterioration. More than 80 percent of the US population reports usage of four or more products with antimicrobial protection from hand soaps to humidifiers with built-in antimicrobial protection.

The full line of technology accessories featuring Microban product protection from Fellowes will be on display at booth #9145 at the International Consumer Electronics Show, January 6-9, 2005 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
