June is National Safety Month
Fellowes Reminds Consumers to Follow Safety Precautions When Using a Shredder
May 16, 2005/Itasca, Ill. - June is National Safety Month, and Fellowes, Inc.,
global leader of shredders for the home and office, is reminding consumers of
safety guidelines and practices to follow when operating a shredder at home or
in the office.
"As a family-owned company, safety is a top priority for Fellowes," said Jude
Rake, president and COO of Fellowes, Inc. "We continue to review usage patterns
and possible safety enhancements to ensure our consumers are safe when using a
Fellowes shredder."
Fellowes recommends the following safety precautions:
-
Never allow children to operate shredders, even under adult supervision.
-
Place the shredder in an area of the home less accessible to children.
-
Do not place hands or fingers in the shredder.
-
Unplug the shredder power cord when it is not in use.
-
Do not operate the shredder while wearing loose fitting clothing that may enter
the shredder opening. If wearing a tie or long necklace, use with caution to
keep these items away from the shredder opening.
-
Never use aerosol, petroleum-based or other flammable products on or near the
shredder.
-
Do not use the shredder if damaged or defective.
-
Do not open the shredder head and do not place the shredder near or over heat
or water source.
-
Thoroughly read the safety instructions outlined in the owner's manual before
use. For a copy of Fellowes owner's manuals, please call customer service at
1-800-955-0959.
Fellowes invented the personal shredder in 1980, and those units were sold
primarily for use in offices. Recognizing a trend toward home usage five years
ago, however, Fellowes proactively adopted the more stringent safety standards
followed in Europe. For example, the opening/throat on a Fellowes shredder is
even narrower than the UL requirements.
As part of its continued commitment to safety, earlier this year Fellowes
launched a new line of shredders that includes enhanced safety features such as
a "Safety Lockout Function," which locks the shredder making it impossible to
use unless it is unlocked.
