Shredder Troubleshooting
Problem: What if My Shredder is jammed
Solution:
Ensure the wastebasket is empty then move power switch to the REVERSE position. This will reverse the jammed paper out of the shredder. If shredder jams again, alternate control switch slowly between REVERSE and AUTO (l) positions to attempt to move jammed paper completely through the shredder. If the shredder jams in reverse mode, move the switch to AUTO (l), depress the manual forward button located on the center of the shredder head and allow to run for five seconds. If jam does not clear, move switch to REVERSE again and allow to run for five seconds. Repeat this process until jam is cleared. If necessary, turn off shredder and use care to grasp the paper and carefully pull out to clear jam. Once cleared, move switch to AUTO (l) to continue shredding. The jamming may be happening because the cutting cylinder needs to be oiled. See oiling instructions below.

Problem: My Shredder will not operate
Solution:
First, make sure the shredder is plugged in. Move power switch to AUTO (l) position. Cutting cylinders will run for one to two seconds. Feed paper straight into entry until shredder automatically begins shredding. For safety reasons, cross-cut shredders will operate only if the shredder head is in the correct position on the basket. Place the shredder head on the basket with the tab on the side of the basket aligned with the slot at the side of the shredder head. The basket must be pushed all the way into the cabinet.

Problem: Shredder runs continuously when switch is in AUTO (l) position
Solution:
Move the power switch to the OFF (O) position and unplug the shredder. Use a Q-Tip/cotton swab (from the top of the unit) to clear the paper blockage at the auto-start sensor (center) location. Move the power switch to AUTO (l) position and depress the manual forward button for five seconds to clear paper blockage.

Problem: How do I clean the sensors on my DM12C shredder
Solution:
Move the power switch to the off position and unplug the shredder. Remove the media guide safety cover and throat guide screws to allow access to clean the auto start sensors. For a PDF version of the complete procedure click here.

Problem: Shredder suddenly stops while shredding
Solution:
Move power switch to OFF (O) position and allow shredder motor to cool down for 20-30 minutes. Check to see if the shredder is jammed.

Problem: Shredder will only run in reverse
Solution:
Move the power switch to AUTO (l) position and depress the manual forward button for five seconds to clear paper blockage. Make sure the paper is engaging sensor located in the center of the shredder opening.

Problem: Shredder motor runs, but shredder will not accept paper
Solution:
When motor is running, look to see if the cutters are turning. The cutters can be seen by looking into the throat of the shredder. If the cutters aren't moving, the gears may have been stripped and shredder needs to be repaired or replaced.

Problem: Red display light turns on and shredder will not operate
Solution:
If paper appears to be jammed, see above "Shredder is Jammed" solution. If the shredder doesn't appear to be jammed, check that the basket is pushed all the way under the cabinet. Also, the shredder may need a rest. Turn switch to the REVERSE position for two seconds and then back to AUTO (l) position. Move power switch to OFF (O) position and allow shredder motor to cool down for 20-30 minutes.

Problem: Shredder makes a loud squeaking or rubbing noise
Solution:
Cross-cut shredders require monthly oiling of the cutting cylinders to maintain proper operation. Failure to oil the blades regularly could result in excessive noise during operation. See oiling instructions below.

Problem: Shredder shreds less than capacity
Solution:
Your shredder's cutting cylinders probably need oiling. See oiling instructions below.

Problem: Shredder continues to run for 1-2 seconds after shredding has been completed
Solution:
The shredder runs for a few seconds longer in order to keep the cutters clear of paper particles and reduce the chance of jamming.

Problem: Paper is wrapping around cutters
Solution:
Empty the wastebasket and clear any jammed paper.

Oiling Your Shredder's Cutting Blades
To keep your shredder in top condition, the cutting blades need to be oiled every so often (for frequency, please refer to your owner's manual). We recommend using Powershred® Lubricant or a vegetable-based oil (such as corn or canola) in a non-aerosol container with an extension nozzle.

Caution: Never use flammable synthetic oil, petroleum-based, or aerosol lubricants to oil the cutting blades. Some agents may combust, causing serious injury. NEVER USE WD40.
  1. Depress and hold the reverse button down.
  2. Put the tip of the oil bottle in the paper entry and make one or two sweeps the length of the entry while squeezing the oil bottle.
  3. Move the power switch to Auto (I) position, or depress the manual forward button (depending on model of shredder) and allow the blades to run at least three seconds.
  4. Move the power switch to Reverse (R) position and allow it to run for at least three seconds.
  5. Repeat steps three and four above at least three times.

Binding Machine Troubleshooting
Problem: The Binding Machine Bar is Stuck
Solution:
Your machine is most likely jammed. If your machine should jam during punching, do not tear out the paper in an effort to clear it. This will clog the cutting area and can cause damage to the machine. Instead, raise the bar and lower it with as much strength as you can, repeating until you have cut through all of the sheets.

Problem: The Last Hole Was Only Partially Punched
Solution:
This usually occurs due to improper sheet alignment. Adjusting the centering of your document can solve your problem. Because your machine is factory-set to punch holes in the document size(s) most common to your geographic region, if your sheets are somewhat larger or smaller, you may need to adjust the centering. Place a sheet of scrap paper (same size) and punch it, following the standard punching procedure. If the row of holes is not centered along the document edge, turn the document wheel a little in one direction or the other to move the edge guide to a better position and retest. (Note: Although a range of document sizes is marked on your machine, you will only be able to punch the size(s) that are set for your geographic region.)

Problem: The Line of Punched Holes are Crooked
Solution:
When documents are not placed in the punch entry evenly, or when cuttings have become stuck below the dies, this can occur. To release cuttings into the waste drawer, slide a ruler or piece of cardboard into the entry and move it back and forth a few times.

Problem: The Edges of the Punched Holes are Damaged
Solution:
You may be punching too many sheets at one time. Try reducing the number of sheets per batch.

Problem: Pages Are Loose and Separated From the Binding Comb/Coil
Solution:
This occurs when the binding wire is not fully closed. Put it back into the wire press and lower the bar farther than before.

Problem: It's Difficult to Turn the Pages
Solution:
For wire binding, too much pressure has most likely flattened the wire. Unfortunately, you cannot salvage the document in this case. Next time make sure you lower the bar with gentle, continuous pressure and not beyond your document's wire size.

Problem: I Have Loose and Unglued Sheets in my Thermal Binding Document
Solution:
This can happen for several reasons, including not tapping the spine firmly enough at the start to make contact between document edges and the glue strip, removing the document too early, and opening the document or laying it flat while it is still warm. Try repeating the process from the beginning. If you are using a TB450, loose sheets may also indicate a heat cycle that is too short. Try repeating the process with a longer cycle.

Problem: I Have Loose, Glued Sheets and/or Damaged Thermal Bindings
Solution:
This can happen when the document is not removed from the machine promptly at the end of the binding process. If you are working with a TB450 Thermal Binding Machine, it may also be caused by a heat cycle that is too long. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do to salvage the document or documents in this case.

Laminating Machines Troubleshooting
Problem: Laminated Pouches are Cloudy
Solution:
The temperature is too low or the pouch/contents combination is too thick. Try passing your work through the machine one or more times, or raising the temperature if you can. Otherwise, choose a thinner pouch or reduce the weight or thickness of the contents.

Problem: Laminated Pouches are Curling
Solution:
Make sure that the support rack is in place.

Problem: Laminated Pouches Have Wavy Lines
Solution:
The temperature is too high. Turn the machine to a lower setting if you can. Passing the cleaning sheet through will also help cool down the rollers.

Problem: Laminated Pouches Have Spots on Them
Solution:
The rollers have deposits of adhesive. Follow the cleaning procedure as described below in the maintenance section.

Problem: Laminated Pouches Have Opened Edges
Solution:
Your material is too close to the edge of the pouch to create a strong seal. Next time make sure your materials are at least 3 mm or 1/8" from the three unsealed edges of the pouch.

Problem: Pouch is Stuck in the Rollers
Solution:
This is probably due to incorrect placement of the contents or too thick a pouch/contents combination. If the top of the pouch has emerged from the material exit, pull on this end of the pouch evenly and slowly, making sure not to speed up the rollers. If this does not work or the pouch has net yet emerged from the exit, unplug the machine and send it to us for repair, directly or through your retailer. Do not attempt to pull it out backwards against the direction of the rollers. This will damage the machine.

Cleaning and Maintaining Your Laminator
To keep your laminator free of adhesives that could affect the quality of your work, it is important to keep the rollers clean. The cleaning frequency depends on how often the machine is used. The best time to clean the rollers is when they are still hot, right after laminating. The heat is necessary for the cleaning process.

To clean the rollers:
  1. Turn selector to "heat" if it is not already on this setting.
  2. Wait for the readiness light and signal.
  3. Insert the cleaning sheet included with the machine, repeating two or three times.
  4. Insert a plain white sheet of paper to test for remaining traces.
  5. Reinsert the cleaning sheet, if necessary, and retest.
To clean the exterior of your machine, wipe with a soft cloth dampened with plain water.
