Working from Home Can be Risky Business
Fellowes, Inc. Offers Paper Shredders Designed To Protect Children and Pets
Itasca, Ill. (June 11, 2007) - For a growing number of individuals, conducting business from home is the perfect solution to the work-life balance. It offers greater flexibility, a more relaxed working environment and the opportunity to spend extra time with family.
In fact, a recent survey revealed that 45 percent of full and part-time working adults work from home one or more days per week and 73 percent said they have a home office or work area at home1.
As more consumers opt to conduct business from home and with the continued threat of identity theft, paper shredders have become a necessary piece of home office equipment. However, as with many pieces of equipment, its presence can pose potential safety risks for families with children and pets.
June is Home Safety Month, making it the perfect time to evaluate the safety of all home office equipment, including paper shredders.
"With an increase in the number of people working from home, it's essential that we educate families about the safety risks that are associated with home office equipment," said Meri-K Appy, president of the national nonprofit Home Safety Council. "Close supervision of children around any type of home office equipment is a vital step to avoiding injuries. Also it's important to consider home office products with built-in safety features, offering that extra level of protection to help ensure the safety of loved ones."
In an effort to address home office safety concerns, Fellowes, Inc., the leading shredder manufacturer, launched its Powershred home and office series (including the P-57Cs, PS-77Cs and the SB-97Cs) featuring a patent-pending SafeSenseT technology that ensures the safety of the user, including children and pets, by automatically disabling the shredders when sensing hands or pets are too close to the paper opening. An electronic sensor surrounds each shredder's paper entry and shuts down the machine immediately when it comes in contact with the energy field created by humans and larger pets.
"We are always looking for ways to enhance our products so they have the safest features possible," said Kristen Gehrig, director, global marketing at Fellowes, Inc. "Our new shredder line combines the best in identity security and home safety, giving consumers one less thing to worry about."
The Powershred series is available at select office retailers nationwide with prices ranging from $59.99 for the P-57Cs to $249.99 for the SB-97Cs.
Fellowes has a long history as the category leader in shredder safety. The company imposes strict safety requirements that go beyond the voluntary standards currently used by the industry, and several shredder models feature a patented safety lock for added protection.
In addition to choosing an appropriate paper shredder, users should review all safety instructions outlined in the owner's manual prior to use. Shredders should also be turned off when not in use and kept out of children's reach.
