Pros: Quality Construction, Quiet Operation, Safety Features, Secure Cut Size
Cons: Jam Resistance, Sheet Capacity
" Its a very quiet machine. im impressed with the size of the shredded piieces and the security that provides. It doesnt shred quite as thickly as i had hoped. i tried a junk mail sealed envelope and it would nt feed it. so i had to open it and separate it for shredding. Overall i am happy with it. "

Pros: Jam Resistance, Quality Construction, Safety Features, Secure Cut Size, Sheet Capacity, aesthetics
Cons: can't shred cds
" I was wishing to see some reviews before buying one of these, but couldn’t find any, so I’ll be a guinea-pig. I am upgrading from a 25+ year old Dahle strip-cut shredder which has had a light life and is still working, but is not secure enough these days, and struggles with till receipts which have to be fed in alongside ordinary paper for the cutters to bite.
As the specs say, this model LX211 is a 15 sheet feed, 20 minute runtime shredder that can micro-cut paper, staples, small paper clips and credit cards, but can’t handle CD’s. This would have been nice, but I haven’t found any reasonably priced micro-cut shredder that can do this, except with a separate entry slot cutting very wide-strips. This model is suitable for home or small office use, available in white or black.
Aesthetically, I liked the look of this new design much better than the previous ranges. I don’t feel that I need to hide it away. It has a minimal look with a discreet control panel, consisting of forward and reverse touch sensitive buttons and an indicator strip they call the “Intellibar”. The brand name is very discreet.
My unit was delivered within a double-walled plain corrugated cardboard box, containing another thinner single walled corrugated cardboard box with the glossy product information printed on it. There is some substantial egg-box type paper-fibre cushions protecting the corners at the top and bottom, and at the bottom, the unit sits on this cushion taking the strain from the casters that would otherwise probably break if a delivery driver dropped the unit roughly.

However, after an undamaged delivery, my first machine failed to work out-of-the-box. I could hear a quiet whirring and feel air blowing out of the back, but my single condemned sheet of paper sat in the slot traumatised but undamaged, and the teeth observed down the slot weren’t moving. Fellowes customer services acknowledged the fault and offered to pickup the broken one and sent a replacement which does work.
The unit sits on four small plastic swivel casters which come pre-installed, the front two of which are lockable, although the plastic wheels do not grip well on a laminate floor so you can still drag the locked wheels across the floor. There is a handle recess at the rear and together with the drawer handle recess, the unit can be lifted up for transport. It weighs about 13Kg (empty).
The mains lead length is about 1.5metres (Both UK and Euro plug leads were supplied with my unit) and has a detachable right angle IEC connector so the wire trails nicely downward at the rear. Above this connector near the top right of the unit, there is an on/off rocker switch operated side to side, which should be easy to find by feel. The unit does go into standby after a few minutes of non-use, but I do like to be able to switch things off properly.
The waste bin pulls out from the front and rides on two small rollers mounted in the base which reduces friction when pulling out the drawer. It has two moulded hooks internally at the front left and right for attaching a bin liner bag, and a finger sized hole centre-rear to stuff excess bag material into. The bin sections are screwed together, but screw-heads within the bin area are rounded, there being no inward facing screwthreads to rip the bag and no visible screws on the outside. The bin material is plastic which is adequately stiff and doesn’t feel brittle. The bin fit appears a little sloppy until pushed fully home, when it squares up nicely with the rest of the unit, so it looks and feels a positive fit.
There is no transparent window in the waste bin to offer a view of the shreddings, which pleased me because I don’t want to see a mess or have to clean the dust from inside the window, and if you do use a bin liner, all you would see is the ruffled bag anyway. There is indication in the Intellibar when the bin is getting full. The machine stops when it is full. It may be necessary to give the bin a shake to level the contents when nearly full as sometimes a little mountain of shreddings develops in the middle of the bin and stops the unit prematurely. Another light indicates the bin door is open and prevents operation.
The control buttons are touch sensitive- a forward arrow button can be used to run the shredder after lubrication, which is recommended regularly with most shredders, and a reverse arrow button does the same backwards if there is a need to clear a jam manually. There are no other control buttons. A safety feature stops the motor when the area around the feed slot is touched, and the bar indicates yellow. I often accidentally trigger this when feeding small receipts into the slot, but it restarts shortly after taking your fingers away.

The ‘Intellibar’ is simply a strip of indicators behind a frosted plastic strip. When switched on there is a Blue light in the centre of the bar indicating readiness, unless it has gone to sleep after a few minutes. Inserting paper turns the bar green in the centre and paper is shredded. As thicker bundles of paper are fed, the green bar expands until it reaches optimal load when it pulses. Beyond this it turns yellow, and finally red when you exceed its capacity. If you insert an implausible stack of paper the bar turns red and it refuses to chew on it.
Feed speed may not be as fast as most cross-cut machines, but this one micro-shreds which takes longer to chew. The noise is not bad, the mechanism is high-pitched but subdued.
It successfully shredded a bank card but doesn’t segregate the plastic waste from the paper bin.
I have no experience with other Fellowes shredders, so can’t comment whether its better or worse, but overall I’m pleased with its performance and aesthetics and can only hope it lasts as long as my old shredder.
