How Monitor Arms Work and Why They Matter

Worklife Coach Pointing

Most people won't give much thought to how their screen is positioned, and it is usually a case of setting up your monitor, plugging it in, and starting to work. That may feel like job done, but is that truly the case? Where your screen sits, how high it is, how close to you it is and what angle you’re looking at it all make a bigger difference than you may have realised.

If you have ever found yourself hunching, raising your neck, or rubbing your shoulders during the day, it may mean your monitor setup is not correct for you, and you are not putting your posture first. It is at this stage where monitor arms take centre stage. They’re not complicated, but they are game changers to your workstation setup.

What is a monitor arm?

If you're wondering what a monitor arm is and how to choose which is the best monitor arm for you, you're not alone. Most people have seen one, even if they didn’t know what it was called.

In simple terms, it’s a movable arm that attaches to your desk or wall and holds your monitor up off the surface. The arm lets you lift, lower, pull, tilt, and swivel your screen so you can get it positioned correctly for your specific needs. It’s a bit like having your screen on a floating arm that moves with you.

There are different types too, such as single, dual, triple and quad arm setups, plus gas spring models for smoother motion.

How does a monitor arm work?

Single monitor arm on desk

Now you know what a monitor arm is, the logical next step is to understand how a monitor arm works. It’s a fairly straightforward answer. The arm usually clamps to the edge of your desk (or fits through a hole if your desk has one), and your monitor attaches to the end of it using a standard VESA mount.

Once it’s all set up, you can move the screen around however you like. You could push it up, tilt it back, or even rotate it to portrait. It is this kind of adjustability that makes it far simpler to sit properly and stay comfortable throughout your time at your workstation.

And if you’re asking, do monitor arms work with any monitor, the answer is almost certainly yes. If your monitor has VESA holes on the back and doesn’t weigh more than the arm is rated for, you’re good to go.

Why do monitor arms actually matter

At first glance, a monitor arm might seem like a nice-to-have rather than an essential element to your workspace setup. But if you sit at a desk for more than a few hours a day, it becomes more of a need-to-have.

At Fellowes, we have developed the Fellowes 4 Zone Approach®. It’s a way of designing workspaces that support your body, and monitor arms fit into Zone 3.

Zone 3: Relieve Neck Strain

When your screen is too low, you end up leaning forward, which pulls your neck and shoulders out of alignment. Raising the screen helps keep your posture more natural, helping to promote comfortable viewing and relieve neck strain.
