How to choose the right boxes for your house move

Even if you’re facing a home filled with years of belongings, you can reduce the stress of a house move by getting your packing right.

Around 2.4 million UK households move each year, and around half of these choose to pack and move by themselves. The ones who plan ahead and work out their needs will usually find their moving experience a much easier and happier one.

Choosing the right boxes is one clear way to make your house move simpler. Not only will it speed things along and save time and energy but also help you sort out your possessions more easily at your new house.

Below we explore the different options when choosing your moving boxes.

Why corrugated moving boxes?

Strength

Moving boxes are usually stronger than typical cardboard boxes because they need to be able to handle multiple heavy items such as books, kitchen equipment and electronic devices. All BANKERS BOX® removal boxes are made from high quality corrugated cardboard, with some made from double corrugated board for extra strength. This makes them much stronger than standard cardboard boxes.

Space Saving

To help you get ready for your house move, moving boxes are often supplied in flat pack form, which ensures that they take up minimal space until they are needed. Once filled, some can be safely stacked several boxes high, depending on the box type. You can also flatten them down to flat pack after use for easy storage, ready for your next big move.

Making Moving Easier

Some moving boxes offer different features that make them easier to use and more suited to the job at hand. Fellowes moving boxes featuring FastFold automatic assembly can be assembled with one simple push, saving you time and energy. Others are designed to ensure no tape is needed to seal the box, meaning you can add and remove items as many times as you want. Lock-in handles, where the lids fold into the reinforced handles, also offer more strength and comfort, so you don’t need to worry about box handles breaking on moving day.

Sustainability

We all want to reduce our impact on the environment and, thankfully, there are more sustainable options when it comes to moving boxes. Look for removal boxes that are made from 100% recycled board and are 100% recyclable. As part of our commitment to more sustainable practices, we’ve taken further steps to make our moving boxes more sustainable.

All our BANKERS BOX® moving boxes come with the industry recognised Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) certification, guaranteeing they’re sourced from responsibly managed forests. Additionally, all the inks used are water based and the adhesives used are solvent free. This makes them a more sustainable choice for your house move.

Moving Box Sizes

Last, but by no means least, it’s time to consider what size boxes you’re going to need for your move. Below we outline why you’ll more than likely need a mix of small, medium and large boxes to pack everything in your home.

Start small

It’s easy to underestimate how many small, heavy items there are in a house, from books and toys to small kitchen items. Small boxes, which usually have a capacity of 30L-50L, should be used for these, and you’re likely to need several small boxes for every room. Take care not to exceed a weight of 20kg for each box, as this is the most that one person can safely lift.

Small Boxes

In the middle

For mid-weight and bulky items, you will need medium boxes. These generally hold between 60L-90L and are perfect for kitchen appliances, games consoles and other similar sized items.

Medium Boxes

Go large

Big moving boxes, which have a capacity of 100L and above, are designed for lightweight bulky items such as bedding and towels. These boxes should not be packed with heavy items, while you should remember that each box should weigh no more than 20kg when filled.

Large Boxes

Get ready for your house move

Moving house can be overwhelming at times, but hopefully now you know which type of moving boxes you need, ticking one more item of your to do list.

Good luck with your move and remember, it's a fresh start in a new space so enjoy yourself!
